Menopause Sucks: Advice for Riding the Hormonal Rollercoaster

Let’s be honest: Menopause Sucks and nobody really prepares you for it. One day you’re you, and the next you’re dripping with sweat and crying about nothing. It sneaks up on you like that. Menopause isn’t just about hot flashes; it’s a full-body and mind experience that will leave you wondering what the hell is happening to you.

Good news, you are not the only one. More good news, there are ways to make it a little smoother. In this post there are tips, emotional support, and hopefully a little humor to help you ride the wave.

Understanding What’s Happening

First things first: you need to know what your dealing with. What is Menopause? Technically, it’s the point when you haven’t had a period for 12 months. But, did you know the rollercoaster starts before that, it’s called Perimenopause. This is when the hormones start shifting, you’ll have irregular periods, start hot flashing, mood swinging, and more. Once you hit that 12-month mark you are in what is called Postmenopause (that’s me).

Let’s Talk Symptoms: Everyone’s experience will be different, some will go through things others may not, but there seems to be pretty common things that happen to us all. Some common ones include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Mood changes or irritability
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Weight gain
  • Brain fog and forgetfulness

Your body is going through a major shift, you’re not imagining things, and you’re not alone.

Lifestyle Tweaks That Help

Your lifestyle and daily habits can make a huge difference in how you handle the experience of menopause. What you eat will play a big part in how you feel. Gone are the days when we can shove whatever we want into our mouths. It’s not about your weight though, it’s about your health. We aren’t spring chickens anymore, our bodies are weakening and it’s for us to keep it strong.

Go for a balanced meal, calcium and magnesium are beneficial for keeping the bones strong. Remember things like greens, nuts, dairy, soy and legumes are your friends now.

Physical activity is very important to help with mood regulation, sleep, and to keep your body strong. You don’t need to become a gym rat, I know I won’t, but I do walk around my neighborhood and like to dance at home and that counts.

Sleep, oh how I love sleep but sleep stopped loving me. I struggle with bouts of insomnia so I started to try ways to help me unwind. Create a cool, dark and quiet sleep-friendly environment. Avoid the screens and try something calming. I like to read with a night aid tea.

Emotional and Mental Wellness

Your hormones are wrecking havoc on your brain chemistry causing mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Don’t be hard on yourself, practice self-compassion. This is a big change and it’s okay to feel off. Make space for things that make you happy and brings that zen into your life.

Talking helps, too. Nothing wrong with therapy but it doesn’t have to be the only way. Talk with a great friend, find an online support group, or talk to yourself. I know sounds loco, but I have found it helps me process what I’m feeling by saying it out loud (in the comfort of my home).

Talk to your doctor (if you have one). I’m not in a position to lecture anyone on this because I don’t have a doctor or insurance. If I did though, I would talk to them about all my symptoms (even the embarrassing ones). Talk to them about hormone replacement therapy (HRT), non-hormonal meds, or natural supplements. Everyone is different and have different needs and risks, so what works for one woman may not be the right thing for you. Your doctor can be a valuable partner in this journey.

Tips and Tricks That Help

  • Do yourself the favor by investing in breathable sheets and cooling pillows, what a difference it does make.
  • Get yourself a personal fan or cooling towels you can carry in your bag.
  • Buy a good moisturizer for your skin and get some vaginal lubricant to help with the dryness.
  • Get yourself a cup and a mug you love to encourage you to drink plenty of water and enjoy some teas.

Some women have told me they have found relief with natural remedies like primose oil, red clover, or black cohosh. I don’t know much about these things but I thought it fair to share what others have done too. Please do your own research and use your own discretion on things like this.

Embrace the New You

Menopause isn’t an ending, it’s a transformation. Yes, it can be rough but it is also freeing. NO MORE PERIODS.

This is a time to nurture yourself. Redefine your priorities, explore new interest, hell, just take up space. You’ve earned it.

Menopause may be unpredictable, but you are stronger then any symptom thrown your way. Don’t go through it alone or in silence.

Take a deep breath, grab a fan, and step into this new chapter with confidence.
